Al-Futtaim Motors, the exclusive distributor for the prestigious Lexus brand, today unveiled the world’s leading luxury hybrid, the LS600h L and the new luxury off-road SUV, the GX460 at the Dubai International Motor Show.
Speaking at the press conference held on day one of the show, Len Hunt, Group Automotive Director for Al-Futtaim commented: “This year Lexus celebrates its 20th anniversary and in this relatively short period of time in brand terms, Lexus has built a reputation for challenging convention in the premium market, setting new standards for refinement and reliability; pioneering completely new segments; and taking customer satisfaction to new heights.
The success of Lexus in the UAE has been growing steadily over the last three years and we are pleased to confirm that despite the challenging economic conditions the brand has increased its market share in the UAE in 2009. This growth in popularity is reflected in Lexus’ recent entry in the top UAE brand index released by YouGov Siraj where it joins only three other automotive brands in the top ten.”
Sales in this period were clearly fuelled by the introduction of new vehicles. The new generation RX350 featuring many industry firsts such as the Remote Touch control system launched in March. This was followed by the head-turning new convertible, the IS300C with the best in class retractable roof.
Mr Hunt continued: “The Lexus models exhibited at this year’s Motor Show clearly demonstrates that Lexus is a leader in technological innovation with a product to suit every luxury segment in the UAE from the sumptuous large SUV, the LX570 to the flagship sedan, the LS460. Engineered through the distinctive L-Finesse design language, Lexus has created visually outstanding and elegant models that are increasingly attracting consumer attention and breaking many loyalties with the traditional luxury German brands.
To celebrate this important anniversary of the brand, we are delighted to mark the occasion with the exclusive Middle East preview of two brand new models; the first of which is the region’s first full hybrid vehicle, the outstanding Lexus LS600h L, which will go on sale officially in January 2010.”
Introducing the LS600h L
The LS600h L features the sophisticated second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system and is is a prime example of Lexus technological accomplishment that combines high performance, quietness and fuel efficiency with the highest levels of driver and passenger comfort to deliver a drive experience unparalleled in its class.
Hugh Dickerson, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Al-Futtaim Motors stated: “This launch is extremely important for the region because it is the first full hybrid vehicle. There are various hybrid systems on the market today and most fall into one of two categories: mild or full. In mild hybrids, the engine is generally the major power source and must be turned on to operate the vehicle; the electric motors are used to assist the engine. The most advanced type of hybrid is ‘full’ which means the vehicle can start and run for varying speeds and distances on electric power alone. Lexus hybrid vehicles are, and always have been, as in the LS600h L, full hybrids.”
The stunning LS 600h L features a 5 litre V8 hybrid engine that delivers the power of a V12 engine with the efficiency of a V6 engine. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system combines this engine power with two high output electric drive motors to provide regenerative power to drive the car by themselves, or by boosting the petrol engine. This latest generation system is the most advanced automotive powertrain in the world and is displayed in a separate exhibit in front of the main Lexus stand.
All-new GX460 luxury SUV
Also making its UAE debut at the show is the all-new Lexus GX460 luxury SUV featuring a superior blend of on and off-road capability. An extensive array of advanced technology provides exceptional on road ride comfort and handling as well as true off-road capability. The GX combines function and elegance with unmistakable brand identity rooted in the L-finesse design language. Its tough premium image originates in the designers aim to create the impression that the vehicle had been sculpted from a single block of metal.
The 2010 Lexus GX460 is powered by a 4.6 litre V8 engine which teamed with a new six-speed automatic transmission, delivers an impressive 292 horsepower. Equipped with standard full-time four wheel drive, low gear range and Crawl Control system, the GX460 can cope with any type of terrain driving. On road the GX460 benefits from Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System with Adaptive Variable Suspension, Pre-Crash System with radar cruise control and round view monitors positioned at the front and sides for an exhilarating, safe performance.
The GX460 provides seven passengers with superior comfort within a luxurious, quiet environment expected in a Lexus. Key features of the versatile interior include foldable and reclining second row seats with a 60/40 walk-in function to access the standard power fold-flat third row seats.
Positioned between the premium luxury SUV, the LX570 and the cross-over RX350 model, the GX460 will enter the luxury medium-size SUV segment in the UAE during the first quarter of 2010.
Mr Dickerson commented: “Once again, Lexus has produced a powerful vehicle hallmarked with its characteristic intelligent design and technology; while also providing family friendly comfort and premium craftsmanship. The GX460 is unique in that it features a whole host of technologies that traditionally are offered in separate on and off-road model versions. The GX460 will be a huge asset to our existing fleet of luxury SUV’s while challenging the boundaries within the luxury medium-size SUV segment.”
LFA super car
A further attraction on the Lexus stand is the racing version of the LFA exotic sports car which participated in the 24-hour endurance race at the German Nurburgring race circuit in May earlier this year. Featuring a 4.8 litre V10 sports tuned engine that produces 560 horsepower and top speeds in excess of 320kph, the LFA was pushed to the limits during the grueling race.
Originally unveiled as a supercar concept in 2005, the LFA remains the stuff of dreams for many, but appears it will soon become a reality on UAE roads.
Mr Dickerson commented: “We are also extremely excited about the possibility of bringing the super car LFA to the UAE. Lexus has already announced the vehicle will go into production with only 500 models scheduled to go on sale worldwide. We are currently in negotiations with Lexus to discuss quantities. With this fantastic line up of stunning luxury vehicles, we predict 2010 will see further customer migration away from our competitors.”
World premier event
Continuing celebrations surrounding the twentieth anniversary of the brand, the Lexus flagship SUV, the LX570, is making history as it is gradually turned into gold during the five day show. This is the first event of its kind in the world and marks the first commercial 24 carat gold car in the GCC.
Mr Dickerson explained: “There is a growing demand for custom design within the UAE automotive market and we want to explore this avenue for our Lexus customers. Gold Emotion provides a unique service that combines the traditional, elegant craftsmanship of gilding with modern day usage; a technique our customers will undoubtedly appreciate.”
Four expert craftsmen from the Paris based company Gold Emotion will apply 40,000 gold leaves to the luxury SUV during the Motor Show. Mr Dickerson confirmed that the special edition gold Lexus LX570 will be available for sale once the transformation is complete. Commenting on the durability of the gold application, Mr. Rousseau, Managing Director, Gold Emotion, responded: “The gold leaf is protected by a varnish which will allow the special edition LX570 to be driven just like any other vehicle. We are really excited about this unusual commission and delighted to bring this world premier attraction to Dubai.”
Mr Dickerson concluded: “The Dubai International Motor Show is an important event on the international motor show circuit which provides a fantastic opportunity to share our latest products with the UAE. Visitors will undoubtedly be impressed by the variety of exciting new products and technology exhibited this year. Lexus has come a long way in 20 years with the GCC becoming one of its fastest and most important markets. Our customers can expect the next 10 years to be even more exciting as Lexus continues to introduce exciting new models and cutting edge technologies.”
