The song, and We Are the Champions were written due to an event that happened on the 1977 British Tour. The stamping effects were created by the band overdubbing the sounds of themselves stomping and clapping often and incorporating delay effects to develop a sound like lots of people were contributing. The double A side got to number 4 on the USA Billboard singles chart, becoming their second hit in the US. The song was actually the flip side of We Are the Champions in Britain, though the American record company requested to put the two songs together as a double A side since American radio stations were playing them back to back. This is the reason why the songs tend to be paired on the radio and at sporting events, where they are regularly played.
